Ms Juliana O'Connor-Connolly MLA, JP and Mr Alfonso Wright MLA attended a Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Seminar in London this week entitled "Restoring Trust in the Political Process". They were joined for some of the presentations and workshops by Ms. Jennifer Dilbert, Cayman Islands Government Representative in the United Kingdom. Within the many sessions of the five day seminar the participants explored and discussed the challenges involved in restoring integrity to and eradicating corruption from the political process. The participants also discussed how to enhance links between the people and parliament; how to maintain human rights and civil liberties whilst combating international terrorism; how the media can contribute to restoring trust in the political process and the need to re-engage with and meet the aspirations of the next generation.
Ms. O'Connor-Connolly stated that "the CPA Seminar was informative, productive, relevant and timely." She further said that she was extremely impressed by the high calibre of speakers at the Seminar and was also most grateful for the opportunity to engage in lively and passionate intellectual exchanges with her fellow Commonwealth Parliamentarians.
Ms Dilbert took the opportunity to take Ms O'Connor-Connolly and Mr Wright to a meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Group for the Cayman Islands which was held at the House of Commons. At the meeting they were able to meet members of the group and discuss issues relating to the Cayman Islands.
