Appleby’s newest scholarship recipient, 22 year old Victoria King, will be heading off to the College of Law in Manchester, England in September to undertake the Graduate Diploma of Law (GDL) course. Victoria is a recent Bachelor of Arts graduate from the University of Virginia where she double-majored in Philosophy and Spanish. While in university, she made the esteemed Dean’s List over the course of three semesters and, throughout her Philosophy studies, became accustomed to long, demanding reading assignments and writing challenging papers, both of which will prove instrumental in her success as a law student.

Since April, Victoria has been putting her learned principles into practice while interning with the Intellectual Property Services team at Appleby. “I am most grateful for the opportunity to gain some hands-on experience at the firm before heading off to England to pursue my legal studies,” Victoria said. “I have truly delved into the legal field these past few months and the exposure has been invaluable. I am very much looking forward to taking my new-found skills to the next level in the classroom.”

Victoria was among 21 of the scholarship applicants vying to be Appleby’s 34th recipient. “At Appleby we are keen on providing opportunities for Caymanians to pursue a career in law,” commented Huw Moses OBE, Appleby Cayman Managing Partner. “Through her educational achievements, personal accomplishments and her dedication while interning at the firm, Victoria demonstrated admirable qualities and we are confident that she will be prove to be a successful lawyer upon completing her studies and requisite training.”

“Appleby is honoured to lead the way in encouraging young and enthusiastic Caymanians to practice law. Two of our scholarship recipients, Terry-Ann Arch and Liesl Richter, were called to the Cayman Islands Bar earlier this year and are now practicing with the Banking and Asset Finance team.” said admitting Partner and Appleby scholarship recipient, Nicolas Joseph.

Appleby’s commitment to education goes beyond that of the scholarship award. The firm is the exclusive sponsor of the AS and A-Level Law courses and lawyers publish monthly Legally Speaking articles in The Cayman Islands Journal to assist the broader Cayman Islands community in understanding topical legal matters.

The Appleby Scholarship programme was established in 1977 at the inception of the Cayman Islands Law School with the purpose to provide financial assistance to young Caymanians intending to pursue a career as a lawyer. It is the longest running programme of its kind in the Cayman Islands and supports law students by covering the cost of tuition, examination fees and textbooks required for the study at the Cayman Islands Law School or an approved overseas university. The scholarship award also contributes to the living expenses of students studying abroad.
